02-03-2013 Sunday Recruiting Thread (Drama Saturday)

We thought Friday was a crazy day in recruiting, well Saturday just took a step up. Reuben Foster’s visit to Auburn was cut short because of dispute between him and an Auburn football player, Alvin Kamara ended up in Tuscaloosa, AL Saturday Night, and Ole Miss might have pulled another 5-star. Unfortunately it was more bad news for the Georgia Bulldogs.

2013 PROSPECT UPDATES:

Reuben Foster: Foster visited Auburn on Friday night and was expected to stay the whole weekend. Going into the weekend, the Tigers seemed to be the favorite to land Foster. Boy did things change Saturday afternoon. Apparently Auburn Center Reese Dismukes used a racial slur towards Foster and things got heated between the two. Foster then left his visit at Auburn and headed towards Tuscaloosa, AL. That is where Reuben is currently at and we have been told by multiple sources that Foster has committed to Alabama and intends on signing with them on Wednesday.

This apparently didn’t just hurt Auburn’s chances at landing Foster, is ruined the weekend for a lot of recruits that were being hosted. Another recruit that was not happy about the situation was one of UGA’s top Targets, Montravius Adams. It has not been confirmed whether or not Adams left his visit, but that did not help Auburn’s chances in stealing him away from UGA or Clemson.

Alvin Kamara: As of Friday Night Kamara had not made a decision on where he wanted to go to school between UGA and Alabama. On Saturday afternoon, he was back in Tuscaloosa for a surprise unofficial visit. Sources have told us that Kamara has committed to the University of Alabama and plans on signing with Bama on Wednesday.

Bama currently has 5 spots open with 9 targets that have Bama out in front. Somebody might be headed towards a greyshirt in the next couple of days…..and UGA should be right there to pick him up if it’s Tyren Jones.

Laremy Tunsil: A day after Tunsil told UGA staff that he was planning on signing with Ole Miss and to move on, he was back in contact with UGA staff on Saturday. Tunsil is very confused in this process on whether to chase his girlfriends and moms dreams, or to chase his dreams. Numerous signs point to Tunsil’s girlfriend being awarded a full academic scholarship to attend Ole Miss with Tunsil, and Tunsil’s mom receiving a job around that area. Tunsil’s high school coach is not happy about what has happened, and he is expected to meet with Tunsil and his dad again tomorrow. This is far from over…….Tunsil has admitted that his heart is with UGA……..and we will see if he follows that in the end.

Toby Johnson: It looks as if Toby will not qualify and UGA has moved away from Johnson in his recruitment.

Davin Bellamy: Bellamy is visiting Oregon University right now and is expected to return tomorrow.

Brendan Douglas: It has been confirmed that he was recruited to play running back at UGA and that answers the questions for Alvin Kamara. Douglas was offered Friday night and accepted Friday night, Kamara was in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.

Come join us right here, right now, all day as we talk UGA football and recruiting. We are now 3 days away from NSD and things are getting more interesting by the minute. Catch daily updates right here!!! Go Dawgs

A couple of thoughtws about the recruiting process.

First; UGA should never compromise its ethics to get a recruit.  It cheapens all that UGA is about.  If a kid wants to be here thats awesome, if he does not then let him go someplace else.

Second; I think every Dawg fan in the state should be putting pressure on kids to go to UGA and it should constantly be pointed out what Auburn, Ole Miss and other schools have done to the 4 and 5 star recruits.

Lastly; As I hinted above, every Dawg in and out of the state of Georgia should be pushing UGA.  Every kid that grows up in the state should be raised a Dawg.  In Texas kids do not go out of state, same for California, Oklahoma and Nebraska, but in Ga the friends and family of these young men think its OK to shop them out to the highest bidder.  This is a sad expression of our state.

jwweath That is great - then people need to understand what happens with the top recruits.  It used to be a recruit in Texas never left Texas and a recruit in Louisiana never left Louisiana.  But that is not the case.  Landon Collins left Louisiana last year when Saban gave his GF a scholarship in volleyball.  The Big DT in Texas, just decommitted and is looking at Bama. Coincedence?  Doubt it.

It is fine to be all about ethics and recruiting - but then you can't bitch when you don't win, get left at the alter on NSD, and why programs like Bama and LSU are loaded with talent.  They are loaded because they do whatever they do to get it.

I don't necessarily say we should break the rules but if the rules are not being enforced, are they really rules then?

Not about selling UGA. About giving the posse benefits. That is as simple as it gets. Our school Pres is not a football fan and we apparently don't cheat. So the players with their hands out go where it is greased or where the "supporter" gets greased from.

Agree with HWJS below.  Honestly, I can't understand for the life of me why we can't sell the UGA Program to some of these Kids. We always seem to put all our eggs in one basket and get burned.   We should Nationally recruit Offensive Tackles, as they are not a dime a dozen, like the Guard Position.  Look for good players & good citizens and target about 5 of them per year.  Adopt the University of Texas recruiting strategy.  Have recruiting wrapped up by December.  You are honest with the kids, but tell them that Football is a business........my business and the University of Georgia's and that it is a Privilege to represent this University and play for the Dawgs.   I am targeting you, and these other 5 players.  Whichever one of you who wants to be a Dawg, should go ahead and pull the trigger.  If not, there is a very good chance that we may be filled up at that position.  Whomever pulls the trigger first, gets to represent this University.  If you continue to take visits, I will take that as a decommitment, and I will offer your spot to the next guy, who wants to be a Dawg.  It is that simple.  I bird in the hand is worth two in the Bush.  This way, if there is Drama in the last month.......you still have time to get a really good player to take the players spot who is waffling.  You also don't worry about losing a kid to shady institiutions like Ole' Piss at the eleventh hour.

I would love to have Foster but after all of this back and forth stuff I think he would be better off somewhere else. This guy is a Randy Moss / Terrell Owens type of player. All the talent in the world but can't see past his on ego. All of these guys who wait til the last minute have some issues. Richt needs to have a cut off day to accept scholarships regardless of what signing day. These guys have their whole Senior year to decide where they want to go. This week before signing day drama is ridiculous. How many times have we been left holding the bag because the UT's, Auburn, Alabama, Clemson and now Ole Miss pull rabbits out of their hat's. I know we have done it before ourselves but I honestly think UGA, South Carolina and Florida have cleaned up their act in the last 15-20 years. The NCAA is a sleep at the wheel and these tactics the other teams are using are a mockery to the rules and ethics of recruiting.

Foster and Kamara both had good chances to sign with Georgia in the past and elected not to.  Kamara at Dawg Night and Foster during his 2nd recruitment.  Both got Georgia's best efforts and said no.  Taking that into perspective, we should not be surprised both are going elsewhere

Toby Johnson not keeping up with studies and becoming ineligible hurts us tremendously, but more so, it has probably ruined that young man's opportunity

Tunsil in not in an enviable positions, torn among his core support group.  ugly, and i cannot believe Ole Miss is using this tactic by using the people he loves

and the new kid, Brendon Douglas.  If a kid is 6', 200lbs, runs a 4.5, and had 1500 yards his senior season, he should be covered in offers, but this guy is not.  and its because he is white.  same thing that used to happen to black quarterbacks.  unfortunate, but system we live in

Not because he is white.  He plays private school and is not a big time runningback.   Cornealous Washington should be all world but we know how that turned out.

highcotton  Axlrodes Brendan Douglas can be a big time running back.....he has all the tools and work ethic to be a bruiser. On another note, UGA still has a chance with Tyren Jones we are hearing

Boy, what a bunch of drama. It looks as though it will continue through NSD. I just want to thank the players that have committed to the G and moved on to take their place with the Dawgs. These guys are solid, focused, and not mealy- mouthed.

BRB is it a NCAA violation to offer family members scholarships and/or jobs? Or is it just a frowned upon practice?

bigredballer 21245 pts moderator

GoDawgs90 I don't think the job part because the job is not at the University......but offering family members a scholly could be an issue

bigredballer  GoDawgs90  I would think if the employer is a booster, this would look an awful lot like an improper benefit.  Probably a gray area, especially if the employee is qualified.

Clearly we have room for a few more. Any last minute offers like "Gates" that we might make?

bigredballer 21245 pts moderator

GURLEYRULES We offered the Olineman from Alpharetta, I expect us to make another late run at maybe a RB. Then trying to finish deal with Adams and Bellamy and trying to pull Tunsil back to our side
